New Label Templates for the Canada Module

Prepackaged products that are considered single-serving (such as a granola bar or small carton of milk) may display the Simplified Labels for Single-serving packages. The Standard and Tabular labels must be bilingual (English/French or French/English) and Genesis R&D will create them as bilingual regardless whether that option is selected. The Linear label must be single language and Genesis R&D will create is as such, even if "show bilingual" is selected.

Because single-serving product packages often have limited space for labeling, regulations allow manufacturers to omit some nutrients, as well as the "Not a significant source of …" footnote. The following are the parameters for the new format:

These nutrients are required in all cases

  • Calories

  • Fat

  • Carbohydrate

  • Protein

These nutrients are required if the declared value is >0

  • Saturated Fat + Trans Fat

  • Sugar

  • Sodium

These nutrients are required in certain cases

  • Any nutrient about which a claim is made

  • Sugar alcohol, vitamins, or minerals (other than iodine added to table salt or fluoride added to water/ice) when added to the product

Voluntary nutrients

  • Manufacturers may voluntarily display nutrients, even if the value is 0.

Examples:

Adult Simplified Standard Label, Single-serving Prepackaged Products

Child Simplified Standard Label, Single-serving Prepackaged Products

Also available:

  • Adult Simplified Horizontal Label, Single-serving Prepackaged Products

  • Child Simplified Horizontal Label, Single-serving Prepackaged Products

  • Adult Simplified Linear Label, Single-serving Prepackaged Products

  • Child Simplified Linear Label, Single-serving Prepackaged Products

Standard/Narrow Labels

The Standard/Narrow label format should be used when there is not enough space for the Standard/Vertical format and before using the Standard/Horizontal format. The required nutrients are the same as for the Standard Labels. They differ, however, in that they cannot be bilingual.

Examples:

Adult Standard Narrow Label

Child Standard Narrow Label

Infant Standard Narrow Label

Where to Find These Label Settings in Genesis R&D

  • The Simplified - Single-serving Prepackaged Product label option is found under Display Type.

  • The Standard/Narrow label option is found under Style.

Other Canadian 2016 label Improvements

  • For all simplified labels: The program now allows nutrients to be shown even if insignificant.

  • For all tabular labels: The program now allows these labels to be created in the bilingual format only.

  • For all linear labels: The program now allows these labels to be created in the single-language format only.
