The Protein Quality Index in the program is based on data from the 2002 Macronutrient DRI reportthe “Report of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Consultation on Protein Quality Evaluation" as outlined in the CFR.
The Protein Quality Scoring Pattern (mg/g protein) is based on the 1-3 year old estimated average requirements for both indispensable amino acids and for total protein. It is recommended that these values be employed for all age groups except infantsthe suggested pattern requirement for pre-school children (age 2-5 years). This pattern is used in the context of U.S. food labeling for foods intended for consumers 1 year and older.
